Caterham Racers prove their metal

Round one of the Caterham Roadsport A championship at Croft was an excellent weekend for many of my clients but in particular for my partnership with Team Fauldsport. Fauldsport drivers proved their quality by finishing in the top 3 of every race against 42 entries and now dominate the Caterham Teams table. The teams brightly coloured cars took an impressive, 3rd and 4th in race one and 3rd, 4th and 5th in race two.

Regular client JJ O’Malley, starting his second season of racing scored two 3rd places although he would have had a comfortable 2nd had a punctured radiator not caused his engine to overheat and loose power in the last minutes of the race leaving him open to assault from ex-star student Gary Halcrow. Lewis Hopkins suffered a gear selection problem which damaged another clean sweep of podium finishes for him but he ran Gary close for lap record pace demonstrating his potential. James Sharrock took 4th in both his races. Leaving these Fauldsport drivers in a strong position for championship honours.

With limited practice compared to his team mates, Paul Storton was finding the handling difference from Roadsport B to RS A tougher than expected. We have no doubt he will move forward strongly in the future.

Perhaps the most impressive performance in the race was from another Fauldsport set up car driven by Adam Ferenczi entering his first EVER car races. With two 5th place finishes surrounded by much more experienced drivers Adam demonstrated remarkable composure to hold on. I knew Adam had strong potential from the first day I sat with him last year but to perform quite so well against such a “rehearsed” field can never be underestimated. Nice work fella ,-).

Long time client and uber dominant 2006 Roadsport A and B Champion Gary Halcrow was back to his old ways too. Starting at the back in both races Gary set lap records in both finishing 4th in the first race and 2nd in the second race. Gary has to be championship favourite after those performances.

Other clients to impress were Darren Laverty, who has made a significant jump from the back of the grid in 2007 to two top 10 finishes at Croft. Equally impressive was Vance Kearney in race one finishing 9th although contact from Toby Dicker damaged his second race chances.

Simon Roche found life difficult with no previous practice around the flat out curves of Croft. However, I know he too will move up the grid as the season progresses.

In the Caterham Academy’s first Sprint at Aintree, Trevor Fowell opened his championship challenge with a win. Trevor is another driver in the mould of Adam so things are looking good in the academy for 2008 as well.
